The Graduate Office is pleased to announce that we are now accepting nominations/applications for the 2023-24 Public Health Sciences School Prizes. The deadline to apply is 11:55 PM on Friday, June 7, 2024.

  • The awards are all listed on the School Prizes Form (https://forms.office.com/r/1Se7CzncJe). Please make all submissions through the form.
  • Your supporting documents (nomination letters, transcripts, academic papers, etc.) should be a single PDF submitted through the form. If you are applying to multiple awards please include a table of contents and clearly title each document.
  • You will need to use your University of Toronto login credentials to make a submission.
  • Students who wish to apply for awards that require a faculty nomination should initiate contact with potential faculty nominators.

Below you will find a brief description of the various awards as well as nomination/application information.

Awards open to students in PHSCI

Elsa M. Cabral Award for Future Leaders in Occupational & Environmental Health

To be awarded following completion of the fall term to a student in the MPH program in the Occupational and Environmental Health Division who, in the academic year in which the award is given, demonstrates a combination of: financial need, commitment to improving outcomes in occupational and environmental health and; scholarly merit based on performance in two required OEH courses, CHL5904H – Perspectives in Occupational and Environmental Health – Legal and Social Context and CHL5910H – Occupational and Environmental Hygiene I. Normally, the successful candidate will be a first year student. Successful candidates will be community-minded, have a dedicated passion for working with people and will exemplify great potential to become a collaborative and innovative change leader in public health.

Application: Students interested in applying can submit a written statement that outlines how they meet the above requirements. Students will also need to submit an SGS Financial Need Assessment Form.

Value of award: Approx. $2000

Paul Corey Award for Excellence in Biostatistics: Community Engagement Award

Awarded to one MSc or PhD student enrolled in the Graduate Department of Public Health Sciences in the field of Biostatistics who fosters community engagement and contributes greatly to the betterment of student life.

Application: Students interested in applying can submit a written statement pertaining to community engagement.

Value of award: Approx. $750

John Hsieh Award

Awarded to a MSc or PhD student enrolled in the Graduate Department of Public Health Sciences in the field of Biostatistics on the basis of academic achievement and the student’s contribution to the student body.

Nomination: Students can self-nominate or be nominated by faculty. Submit a one-page nomination letter.

Value of award: Approx. $290

Randall Coates Epidemiology Prize

Awarded to a MPH or PhD student or a graduate (June 2016 and later) in the Epidemiology Division in the Graduate Department of Public Health Sciences, studying in the area of communicable disease and demonstrating academic excellence.

Nomination: Faculty can submit nominations. Submit a one-page nomination letter

Value of award: Approx. $1,500

James A. McNab Award

Awarded to a MPH Social and Behavioural Health Sciences student in the Graduate Department of Public Health Sciences who has demonstrated excellence or the potential for excellence in the area of health promotion.

Nomination:  Faculty can submit nomination. Submit a one-page nomination letter

Value of award: Approx. $2500

Gina Gesser Memorial Award

Awarded to a MPH student in the Social and Behavioural Sciences Division on the basis of academic achievement.  In addition, the awardee should be pursuing studies in special areas of interest of the late Gina Gesser, namely, gerontology, public policy, equity in health care and health concerns of immigrant populations.

Nomination: Students can self-nominate or be nominated by faculty. Submit a one-page nomination letter.

Value of award: Approx. $2,000

Peter Kong-Ming New Award

Awarded to a MPH or PhD student for the best paper submitted to a course in Social and Behavioural Health Sciences during the current academic year. Thesis and dissertations are ineligible for consideration.

Nomination: Students can self-nominate or be nominated by faculty. Submit an electronic copy of paper (No nomination letter required).

Value of Award: Approx. $600

David Coburn Award

Awarded to a MPH or PhD student enrolled in the Graduate Department of Public Health Sciences in the field of Social and Behavioural Health Sciences on the basis of academic achievement.

Nomination: Students can self-nominate or be nominated by faculty. Submit a one-page nomination letter.

Value of award: Approx. $500

Ilze Kalnins Award

Awarded to a MPH or PhD student enrolled in the Graduate Department of Public Health Sciences in the field of Social and Behavioural Health Sciences on the basis of academic achievement.

Nomination: Students can self-nominate or be nominated by faculty. Submit a one-page nomination letter.

Value of award: Approx. $500

Awards open to students in IHPME and PHSCI

Matthew Adam Kryszajtys Award

Awarded to a student enrolled at the Dalla Lana School of Public Health, in the Graduate Department of Public Health Sciences or the Institute of Health Policy, Management and Evaluation, who demonstrates academic excellence and leadership in the areas of drug policy, mental health and addictions research, and education and knowledge translation.

Application: Candidates will submit a written statement pertaining to their outstanding academic excellence and leadership and significant contributions in the above areas. A letter of reference from a faculty member or supervisor is also required.

Value of award: Approx. $250

Robert Remis Award

To be awarded to a graduate student or recent graduate (up to 3 years since their graduation) in the Dalla Lana School of Public Health who had an excellent peer-reviewed research paper accepted for publication in the previous 12 months, for which they were a lead author. Preference will be given to Master’s level papers in infectious disease epidemiology, and those that could be described as foresightful, original, unorthodox or willing to challenge conventional wisdom within society or academia.

Application: Submit a copy of a peer-reviewed paper published within the past 12 months, or soon to be published, where the applicant was a lead author along with correspondence with the publisher showing confirmation of publication, pending or provisional publication, and a cover letter stating how they see their paper as being foresightful, original, unorthodox or willing to challenge conventional wisdom within society or academia.

Value of award: Approx. $2,500

The Dignitas International Global Health Policy and Research Awards for Student Excellence and Impact

To be awarded in two equal amounts to two students, one at the Master level and one at the doctoral level, who demonstrate academic excellence and financial need, and whose studies focus on global health issues in the developing world with an emphasis on health care system strengthening and demonstrates passion for the subject matter and issues, and whose work will have meaningful and lasting impact for people and communities, in Canada and/or globally.

Application: Students can self- nominate or be nominated by faculty by submitting a written statement pertaining to their outstanding leadership and explaining how they meet the conditions set out above, copies of transcripts and a financial needs assessment form.

Value of award: Approx. $1000
