Award Descriptions:

Paul Corey Scholarship for Applied Research in Biostatistics

Award Value:  Approx. $1900
To be awarded on the basis of academic merit to one full-time thesis-stream MSc or PhD student in the Biostatistics program. Preference will be given to students beginning a thesis that focuses on both methodology and applications directly related to Occupational and Environmental Health.

Heather Milne Nielsen Graduate Scholarship

Award Value:  up to $2,500
To be awarded to up to six full-time or part-time students entering the second year of study in the Master of Public Health (MPH) Program in Nutrition & Dietetics at the University of Toronto. In keeping with the interests of Heather Milne Nielsen, preference will be given to students who meet the following criteria through a combination of study and experience: broad perspective of nutrition long term strategic thinking skills; that they are innovative, questioning, motivated to share knowledge and receptive to new ways of thinking and ideas; that they value and respect the individual and the community and have the potential to build community capacity. Priority will be given to those students who are committed to pursuing interdisciplinary study to broaden understanding of the multifactorial causes of nutritional issues.

Dr. Linda Panaro Excellence in Public Health Practicum Award

Award Value:  Approx. $3,000
Awarded to one Master’s student who is registered full-time within the Department of Public Health Sciences and demonstrates excellence in practicum placement, learning and research, and also embodies Dr. Linda Panaro’s passion for and leadership in public health. Preference will be given to those who also demonstrate academic merit.

Recognition Award for supervisor recipients: To be awarded to one practicum supervisor who demonstrates excellence in coaching and mentorship of students within a practicum placement as well as leadership in and passion for public health issues. Students are invited to nominate their practicum supervisors for this recognition by submitting a Nomination Form.

 Andrea Sass-Kortsak Award

Award Value:  Approx. $4,500
To be awarded to an outstanding research Master’s or PhD student enrolled in DLSPH, including IHPME. Preference will be given to a graduate student engaged in research related to management, evaluation or policy related to occupational health or, secondly, to a PhD student in the Occupational and Environmental Health program.

Vohra-Miller Doctoral Scholarship in Infectious Disease

Award Value:  Approx. $4,000
To be awarded to one full- time doctoral level research or professional stream student entering their second year of any doctoral program at the Dalla Lana School of Public Health on the basis of academic achievement and relevance to the study of infectious disease Selection will be based upon academic excellence.

General Eligibility criteria for PHS Merit-Based Awards:

To be eligible to apply, applicant must:

  • Be a full-time graduate student registered in 2024-25 (Master’s – Years 1 and 2; PhD – Years 1 to 5).
  • Have achieved an overall average of a minimum of A- in the most recent year of full-time study

 Application Process:

To complete the Public Health Sciences Merit and Merit + Need Based Awards form you need to

  • Select the appropriate award(s) on the form.
  • Upload the appropriate documents as one PDF.
  • Include contact information for one academic reference. Exception: Heather Milne Nielsen Scholarship (no reference letter required).

Documents

  • If you are applying to multiple awards you must include a table of contents and clearly title each document.
  • 1 page letter summarizing the relevance of your research and achievements as they relate to the award. If you are applying to multiple awards, it would be prudent to craft unique letters.
  • All transcripts – Graduate and undergraduate unofficial transcripts printed from University student web systems are acceptable. Please note that students are responsible for securing transcripts from current and previous institutions.
  • Curriculum Vitae (maximum of 2 pages)

 Terms and Conditions for PHS Merit-Based Awards

  • The award holder must be a full-time student for at least 14 weeks in any term during which they hold the award. Exceptions apply to certain awards (refer to award descriptions).
  • Repayment of an award is required if a student withdraws from the program or transfers to another field of study..
  • The funding period is for the 2024-25 academic year (September 1, 2024 to August 31, 2025).  Award payments may be applied first to the student’s outstanding tuition fees.
  • Award funds will be incorporated into the annual PhD Funding Package for PhD students in the funded cohort.
