Course Description

This course provides a broad overview of the principles and methods used in family and community medicine/primary care research.

Course Objectives

  • Develop an approach to address family and community medicine/primary care research questions using appropriate research methods;
  • Understand what the different research paradigms are and how they impact the development of the research question;
  • Understand the types of research designs used in primary care research;
  • Understand the threats to validity of different study designs, and become familiar with and apply the methods used to enhance the validity of clinical research;
  • Produce a complete concise draft of a research protocol;
  • Apply ethical principles in the development of their research protocol;
  • Help others in the class to develop these skills and protocols;
  • Provide feedback that will improve the course and its material.

Methods of Assessment

Assignment 1: Review of a Research Paper 5%
Assignment 2: Matching research questions with appropriate design 15%
Assignment 3: Outline of proposed study 15%
Assignment 4: Research Protocol 40%
Final presentation 15%
Class participation 10%
