About the event:
Title: “Exposure to ionizing radiation and dementia mortality among nuclear power plant workers”
There is an important need to understand the possible health effects of ionizing radiation, as exposure, to some degree, is ubiquitous. Millions worldwide are employed in occupations where exposures are several orders of magnitude higher than background levels, highlighting the importance of assessing and mitigating potential health risks. Studies in these workers can help inform on the risks posed to the general population. This presentation will discuss the background, statistical analyses, and results of a study examining the risk of dementia mortality among nuclear power plant workers exposed to low-dose ionizing radiation.
Speaker: Brianna Frangione
Brianna is a second year PhD candidate in Epidemiology at the University of Ottawa. She obtained her bachelor’s degree in health sciences, with a concentration in disability and chronic illness from Carleton University in 2022. She began a master’s degree in Epidemiology at the University of Ottawa and ultimately fast-tracked into the PhD program. She is interested in occupational and environmental epidemiology, and her doctoral thesis focuses on the risk of dementia among nuclear power plant workers using data from the Canadian National Dose Registry.
