March 25th, 6:30-8pm: Ecovillages Around the World: Lessons for Sustainable Community, by Professor Karen Litfin, Political Science, University of Washington

Abstract: In a world of dwindling natural resources and mounting environmental crisis, who is devising ways of living that will work for the long haul? And how can we, as individuals, make a difference? Seeking answers to these questions, Professor Karen Litfin embarked on a worldwide journey researching ecovillages — intentional communities, both urban and rural, at the cutting-edge of sustainable living — which she explores in her newest book, Ecovillages: Lessons for Sustainable Community. Co-hosted by the Dalla Lana School of Public Health and Centre for Environment at the Health Sciences Building (155 College Street), Room 100.

March 26th, 6:30-8pm: Resident Engagement & Community Development in the Lotherton-Caledonia Neighbhourhood, by Zesta Kim, Program Manager at North York Community House (link to flyer TBP)

Abstract: Community development initiatives take time and constant adaptation to meet the needs and interests of residents. North York Community House’s Action for Neighbourhood Change team has evolved a series of unique initiatives aimed at resident engagement, partnership development, and other community development projects in the Lotherton-Caledonia neighbourhood – including a Community Garden and a Family Tree Urban Orchard. Come learn more about their community organizing efforts to address space, food security, community engagement and other emerging issues, and how they embrace every success – and failure – to continually learn and adapt. Co-hosted by the Dalla Lana School of Public Health at the Health Sciences Building (155 College Street), Room 614.
