Clinical practice is often characterized by stark boundaries and tribal mentalities between professions and disciplines. Unfortunately, these same boundaries impede vital communication pathways needed not only for safe and effective patient care, but also collaborative workplace learning. Developing a culture of ‘team reflection’ could help overcome these tensions and serve both learning and patient care. Supporting this development is part of the work ongoing at the University of Melbourne Collaborative Practice Centre.

This session will explore beliefs and behaviours that promote team reflection and inclusiveness, such as the importance of psychological safety and perspective taking, leader inclusiveness, and inclusive leader language. Finally, we will share practical strategies to integrate principles of team reflection and team inclusiveness into interprofessional health professions education and simulation education, illustrating how reflexive leadership can transform team dynamics and enhance both patient outcomes and the learning experience.
