In June 2014 — Drs Michael and Amira Dan made the extremely generous gift of $10 million to establish an Institute to support the creation of an institute dedicated to the health of Indigenous people, based at the Dalla Lana School of Public Health Institute at the University of Toronto.

In March of 2015, the institute was given the name Waakebiness Institute for Indigenous Health in honour of our founding donor. Waakebiness is the name given to Michael Dan by Kalvin Ottertail, a spiritual leader of the Lac La Croix First Nation in Northwestern Ontario; in the Anishinaabemowin language, it means Radiant Thunderbird from the South.

This year we celebrate 10 years of excellence in Indigenous public health education and research. Please join us on March 6, 2025, 2:00 to 4:00 pm for an open house to mark the occasion.
