David Fisman named Epidemiology Division Head and Laura Rosella Epidemiology’s PhD Director
May 29/2017
Professor David Fisman will assume the role of DLPSH’s Epidemiology Division Head on June 1, 2017.
A U of T faculty member since 2006, Fisman is an infectious diseases expert in seasonality, environment, and climate change, as well as pneumonia and sexually transmitted infections. He is cross-appointed in the Department of Medicine, and is an infectious disease consultant at the University Health Network.
In the role of Epidemiology Division Head, Fisman will be responsible for strategic planning, mentoring junior faculty and working with the Division’s faculty and Dean’s Office to ensure that the Division’s teaching, research and service needs are met. He will join the DLSPH Executive Committee and work closely with incoming Interim Dean Adalsteinn Brown to enhance Epidemiology teaching, learning and research within the DLSPH community.
Fisman will take on the role following Professor Nancy Kreiger’s eight-year tenure as division head from 2009 to May 31, 2017. Professor Laura Rosella will become the director of Epidemiology’s PhD program and oversee activities for the 60 students in the program as well as recruitment.
Rosella joined DLSPH in 2014 as an Assistant Professor and she is also a scientist at Public Health Ontario and the Institute of Clinical Evaluative Sciences. She has expertise in population and public health, premature mortality, diabetes and obesity.
“I’m very excited about this change. I am of course looking forward to more free time for myself, but also knowing that I’m leaving the program in excellent hands,” said Professor Kreiger, noting that the program will benefit from Professor Fisman and Rosella’s dedication, enthusiasm, and concern for both the program and its students.
